Four buttons on the input window allow you to search for
words and phrases in a variety of combinations.
Note2
search combination means the words on both sides of

Jesus AND Saviour
means
that both
Jesus
and
Saviour
will be in the verse. When you
click on the AND button, the character
will be inserted for
you. You may type in the
symbol or just a
space
if you want.
The reason the word "and" is not used, is so "and" can be a
word or part of a phrase searched for.

"Multiple Combinations"
Note1
The different "operators" have different priorities. This is
similar to the way that multiplication is done before
addition in an equation. For example, 3+2x4 is evaluated in
the following order: first, 2x4=
, then 3+
=11.
In the
Concordance, ()
has
first
priority. Anything in parentheses
is taken care of first.
Second
is evaluated.
Third, AND
is taken care of.
Fourth, OR
and
are evaluated. If two
operators have the same priority, they are handled left to
right.
For example:
Jesus | Christ Paul
is evaluated in this order --
Christ AND Paul
, then
Jesus OR
(the verses found containing Christ AND Paul)
. If you want
to change to order in which this is done, enclose
Jesus |
Christ
in parenteses.
(Jesus | Christ) Paul
finds the verses
with
Jesus
Christ
first.
Note2

Drawing1
"Priorities"
Note1
NOT, AND, OR, XOR Priority
Note2
A couple of things can help you remember which of these
comes first. The NOT button comes first on the Input Window.
The AND button comes before the OR and XOR buttons. Also,
think of it this way: Use AND to make lists of words (for
example:
James and Paul
Christ and Jesus
Then use
to combine your lists: (James and Paul) or
(Christ and Jesus).
(either...or...but not both) has the same priority as
You can add parentheses, even when they aren't required,
to make it visible what is being done first.
James & Paul
) | (
Christ & Jesus
This is evaluated in the same order either with or without the
parentheses, but seeing it in parenthesis makes it easier to
understand the order of evaluation.
"Not Or Xor And Priority"
Note1
Spaces
Note2
In the input window, a
space
by itself is the
same as

symbol). Spaces

, and
required
. Thus, you can type
( Paul | Silas ) ~ Mark
or
(Paul|Silas)~Mark
They both mean the same thing.
